Winning Formula for Burra Races

A bumper crowd of around 1200 people turned out for the 2016 Burra Picnic Races on Saturday, 22nd October.

There was plenty of excitement on offer with the two main races the Thomas Foods Cup and the Saltbush Ag 900mt highlights of the day.

Aside from the main track events, spectators took in the fun of the Sack Race, Wheelbarrow Race, Hogget Race and the Sleepy Lizard Derby.

Committee president Ryan Oates said it couldn’t have gone any better.

“It was an excellent day, every one had a great time. Despite the cold weather, it went really well.”

“We’re still counting but we’re looking towards around 1200, the same or even a bit better than last year. There were a lot of people that came across from interstate,”

Ryan said with the race day events over it was time for the party to begin which kicked off with local band Ramshackle.

Ramshackle did a great job of keeping the crowd happy from 6 til 9pm and then before any one had time to get to the bar, the other band, Mamboobies fired up,” Ryan said.

“It was good, everyone was dancing and having a good time.”

Money from the Picnic Races will be donated to the Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS) and dispersed to various community groups.

“The local clubs and charities that had stalls this year did really well so they’d have to be pretty happy I think. Most of it was sold out during the day so that’s a good sign of a good day.

“We just want to donate as much as we can this year and keep enough to run the Races again next year,” Ryan said.
